A Well Trained Dog is a Happy Dog!

Having a well trained and obedient dog certainly has its advantages both for you and your dog. Well trained dogs are generally much happier, less likely to fight, and tend to socialise better with dogs that they meet in public.

It is especially important to have a well trained dog if you have babies or small children in the family.

The time spent training your dog will be well worth it in terms of pleasure that you will get from it during the coming years. Just like well behaved children, a well trained and behaved dog makes for a much happier household.

Training your dog will strengthen the bond between you, and the time taken will be well spent.

Good training will assert your position as the “leader of the pack” and help to eliminate many behavour problems. Untrained dogs often get depressed and unhappy and display symptoms of anxiety. By training your dog you are giving him a purpose in life and he will get pleasure out of pleasing you.

When training yur dog there are a few simple basic commands that need to be mastered first. Command words should be kept short. Dogs respond better to short words and especially your tone of voice.

No. I consider this to be the most important command word. Once the dog has learned it is easy to correct him when he does something wrong. No, should be said firmly but not aggressively or shouted.

Sit. Sit is one of the most basic commands and is one that you will need to teach from the outset to maintain control of your dog.

Stay. This means that your dog remains where you place it and only come to you when you call him. This can be quite difficult for for some dogs and patience will be needed.

Down. This is to teach the your dog to lay down on command and should not be confused with telling your dog not to jump up on you.

Heel. This is where your dog learns to walk at your side and the same pace without pulling on the lead. This is very important when you are out walking. Nothing is more tiring than continuously being pulled along. Mastering this will make your walks a lot more enjoyable.

Just training your dog to do these few things will improve your relationship with him and make your time with him much more enjoyable.

Whether your dog is a young or old it should be possible to train him with a little patience and kindness.
