Alex Stein | July 24th, 2010

Dog crates are useful in many ways when you have a dog. You might need one when you travel or you might need one if you plan to show your dog. Many owners, however, feel that putting a dog into a crate is bad or that it is mean. This could never be further from the truth.

In the times when dogs were wild and roamed the wilderness, the need for a den was imminent. This den served not only to protect them from predatory animals, but to also provide relief and security. This was the place that allowed letting down their guard and being comfortable and cozy. The den were usually dug by the dogs and they were only dug big enough to snuggle into with room to turn around in.

Choosing the right size of crate is going to depend on a few things. If you are thinking of getting one for a puppy, then you will need to consider how big that puppy will grow to be. This will save you money in having to but another crate later on. If you are going to use a crate for housebreaking reasons with a pup, then you should inquire about getting a dividing wall to place inside the crate. This will limit the space the pup has and will lessen the chances of him soiling his space.

Finding the kind of crate you need is easy. Check with your local pet stores or go shopping online. Many people choose the popular plastic crates. These types of creates fair well with any size dog and are great for those that travel by plane a good bit. Airlines accept the plastic crate and usually no other. You can choose between a lot of colors and sizes as well.

Are you choosing a crate to take along with you to public places? Many people choose metal crates because they want the choice of interaction with their pet while he is crated. You can also get covers for these types of crates. Many owners that participate in dog shows use metal crates because they are open to the environment.

Have you checked into the styles of wooden crates you can get for a dog? Many of these double as stylish and expensive looking end tables. You can have the perfect place for your dog while also having the perfect place to set your drink while watching television. You can choose from many kinds of wood like cherry and mahogany in the construction of these crates.

The activities you plan to use crate for will help you in determining the type you need to purchase. If you do travel a lot and would like to have your dog along, a plastic crate would be the one you would need. If you do plan to attend dog shows with your dog, then a metal crate would probably be the best choice. For the stable home life situation, a wooden table crate would be the better choice.

Those dog owners that are wary about placing their dogs into dog crates should know that a crate would be the place your dog would choose to sleep in for the security and comfort of his own space. Owners should never use a crate for punishing their dogs and should always keep it clean with favorite toys included for snuggling up to at night.

Quick Tips For Dog Travel

Aaron Woo | April 4th, 2010

In today’s society it is acceptable to bring your dog along on vacation. Many things have to be considered when taking your dog on a trip such as what type of transport will be used and what dog travel carriers to use. The following things should be considered for the next trip you take with your dog.

1. What mode of transport will be used?

Greyhound and Amtrak cannot be used since they only allow service dogs.

A good option may be the car as it is a controlled environment. You will have to plan your stops carefully as you will require a little more space than a regular stop. The area must be suitable for walking your dog on a leash since he will have to do his business.

2. Is your dog safe in the air?

Flying by plane can be a hassle, a dog makes it a bit more complicated. Planning will make it a bit easier. Try to get direct flights as much as possible, layovers can cause potential delays.

Airlines have guidelines that must be followed when traveling with dogs. They list many different rules such as types of dog travel carriers allowed etc. Make sure to check these out before traveling, either on the phone or on the airline website.

3. Is this your dog’s first trip?

Make sure your dog is ready for the trip. If your dog has only traveled to the vet by car he may not be too comfortable going on a trip. A good way to condition him for longer trips would be to take short trips to the beach, park etc. Your dog should be in good health when traveling so a vet checkup is vital. Check to see how your dog is around other people, this will be important as there will be several strangers on the trip.

4. Do you have his regular supplies?

Make sure to take the same food your dog normally eats. Feeding your dog different types of food may be disruptive so make sure to continue his regular diet throughout the trip. Filtered water will be good, you should not take chances giving your dog local water.

I hope these tips allow your trips to go a little smoother.
